The Manor Farm <\/span>San Paolo<\/span> is certainly one of the most important and famous in Italy, both for its history and size. <\/span><\/p>\n

The passion for this business was passed on <\/span>Francesco Basile, <\/b><\/span>the owner: just like his father he was president of the Purebred Breeders National Association from 2000 to 2014. <\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>Murgese Horse<\/b><\/span> and the <\/span>Donkey<\/b><\/span> of <\/b><\/span>Martina Franca<\/b><\/span> selection, continuously bred by the Basile Family, started in 1926 when the <\/span>Ministry of Agriculture, <\/b><\/span>together with<\/span> <\/b>the bygone <\/span>Regio Deposito Stalloni di Foggia, <\/b><\/span>today known as <\/span>Istituto Regionale Incremento Ippico<\/b><\/span>, and through the <\/span>Department of Agricultural Inspectors of Bari, <\/b><\/span>today known as <\/span>the Regional Agricultural Department<\/b><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Considering the bad break the equine sector was suffering during the war and the strong effort made by the breeders to preserve the rare examples of these fabulous animals, after the 2<\/span>nd<\/span><\/sup> World War it was necessary to set a real organization that could preserve these species concerning native thoroughbreds. Therefore, in 1948 <\/span>Alfonso Motolese<\/b><\/span>,<\/span> <\/b>–<\/span> <\/b>Founding Assembly Deputy and Mayor of Martina Franca –<\/span> <\/b>drove a group of 22 breeders, such as <\/span>Alberico Motolese <\/b><\/span>e <\/span>Alfonso Basile<\/b><\/span>, to promote the foundation of the<\/span> <\/b>The<\/b><\/span>\u00a0Regional <\/b><\/span>Association<\/b><\/span>\u00a0<\/b><\/span>of<\/b><\/span>\u00a0<\/b><\/span>Breeders<\/b><\/span>\u00a0<\/b><\/span>of the Murge<\/b><\/span>\u00a0<\/b><\/span>Horse<\/b><\/span>\u00a0<\/b><\/span>and the<\/b><\/span>\u00a0<\/b><\/span>Donkey<\/b><\/span>\u00a0<\/b><\/span>of<\/b><\/span>\u00a0<\/b><\/span>Martina Franca<\/b><\/span>, the really first one in Italy situated in Martina Franca. <\/span><\/p>\n

Thanks to the enthusiasm of the founding members and the managing abilities of <\/span>Alberico Motolese <\/b><\/span>previous<\/span> <\/b>president of the business from 1948 to 1975 and <\/span>Alfonso Basile <\/b><\/span>next<\/span> <\/b>president from 1975 to 1995, the Association gave an important encouragement to the breed\u2019s development and knowledge, and a modern approach to understand the idea of breeding. Particularly, the horse breed was preserved from crossbreeding and purebreds selected. This initiative together with the collaboration of the Regio Deposito Stalloni di Foggia headed that time by the high-skilled zoo technician Colonel <\/span>Agostino D\u2019Alessandro<\/b><\/span>, made of <\/span>the Murgese <\/b><\/span>the unique Italian equine production<\/b><\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n

In December 1956 the Association organized the <\/span>1<\/b><\/span>st<\/b><\/span><\/sup> Competition of <\/b><\/span>the Murge<\/b><\/span>\u00a0<\/b><\/span>Horse<\/b><\/span>\u00a0<\/b><\/span>and the<\/b><\/span>\u00a0<\/b><\/span>Donkey<\/b><\/span>\u00a0<\/b><\/span>of<\/b><\/span>\u00a0<\/b><\/span>Martina Franca Market<\/b><\/span>, an event that today is still celebrated every year during the first weekend of December. The <\/span>Imperial <\/b><\/span>stallion from San Paolo breeding was awarded in that first edition. Over the years, the incredible cooperation to develop the <\/span>Murge<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Horse<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Donkey<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>of<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Martina Franca made possible its national evolution. In 1990, the <\/span>ANAMF National Association of Breeders of the Horse of the Murgia and Donkey of Martina Franca<\/b><\/span> <\/b>was founded with headquarters in the same Martina Franca and headed by <\/span><\/span>Alfonso Basile <\/b><\/span><\/span>who was president until 1995.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>San Paolo<\/span> Manor Farm of Martina Franca in the South \u2013 Eastern Murgia – Valle d\u2019Itria \u2013 is one of the most ancient and renowned manor farms of Puglia. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Manor farms date back to the Spanish domination age and the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. We need to imagine the manor farms as little villages where farmers were at the service of landowners and responsible for land and breeding. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

San Paolo <\/span>Manor Farm is a typical <\/span>Apulian<\/span> manor farm that preserves the original <\/span>livestock life of the Murgese Horse and the Donkey of Martina Franca. This, thanks to the passion of the <\/span>Basile<\/span> Family<\/span> – owner of the manor farm since the 18<\/span>th<\/span><\/sup> century – and a particular geographical location and extension<\/span>:<\/span> 465 meters above sea level and 270 hectares. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The peaceful graze in the wood, the manor and the neighboring <\/span>trulli<\/span>, where daily tasks are developed, and a church watching over them are some of the fascinations that can bring us to conceive how manor farm lifestyle could be in ancient times.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Martina Franca (49.000 cit. and 431 m of altitude) is placed on one of the last southern hills of the \u00a0<\/span><\/span>South – Eastern Murgia and prevails in height in the fascinating Valle d\u2019Itria surrounded by snow white trulli.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Beyond the rich landscape covered by the ancient <\/span><\/span>casedde <\/i><\/span><\/span>(the famous trulli) and the typical building of <\/span><\/span>masserie <\/i><\/span><\/span>(manor farms) Martina Franca benefits from a wide karst area of undeniable magnificence and important naturalistic value. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

After a walk through the white alleys of the ancient area, where the Baroque art is indeed the best feature, a visit to the majestic <\/span><\/span>Basilica of San Martino <\/i><\/span><\/span>and the eighteenth-century halls of the Ducal Palace (location of the yearly and prestigious <\/span><\/span>Festival of the Valle d\u2019Itria<\/i><\/span><\/span> ) you can pleasantly have a seat in one of the many typical pubs to taste the renowned cuisine of Martina. At the end of a relaxing day trip in the pure woodland and ancient manor farms, it is possible to stay in one of the elegant and welcoming hotels of the city. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span><\/span>Valle d\u2019 Itria<\/b><\/span><\/span>, which is placed in the heart of the highland of the Murgia called Murgia of Trulli, represents the unique environmental and cultural model that often evokes extraordinary descriptions from travelers. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Basically the Valle d\u2019Itria is a widespread city covering all around the area of the valley with more the twenty thousand homogeneous villages in the basic building (<\/span><\/span>the trullo<\/b><\/span><\/span>).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Alberobello<\/b><\/span><\/span> is worldwide famous for the trulli. The city of the <\/span><\/span>trulli<\/b><\/span><\/span> was first declared national monument and later a UNESCO World Heritage Site. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The area is full of manor farms and woodlands that make fabulous and fascinating the landscape. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In this context <\/span><\/span>Ostuni, <\/b><\/span><\/span>a territory full of olive trees, between the Murge and the seaside, together with <\/span><\/span>Locorotondo, Cisternino, Castellana Grotte and Conversano <\/b><\/span><\/span>are included.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
